about

MOO is a multi-channel electroacoustic instrument. Contact mics amplify discer blades, seeds and grain in buckets and a butter churn, rebar, a rake, axe handle and large bent metal rod. The instrument can be played by any number of performers. The most literal level of interaction is a performer's contact with the objects through mallets and physical rhythm; events are represented directly through the four-channel sound system. A second level is revealed over time and behind the scenes; interactions also control the playback, mixing, and panning of different field recordings from the site (an auction, a rodeo, stables, barns, and other working spaces). In this way, MOO is both an amplified percussion instrument and a tool for live electroacoustic composition. [Excerpt from CD liner notes]

MOO was developed and presented collaboratively by Jeff Morton and Ellen Moffat, and was visited by thousands of people at the Canadian Western Agribition, in Regina, SK, Canada, November 23-26, 2010.

Recordings on this EP were made using the instrument in situ, and were performed by Jeff Morton.
